MARCH MEMBERSHIP MEETING

NOTICE DATE CHANGE DUE TO GCA CONVENTION

Third Thursday, March 21, 2024 – 7:00 pm

LOCATION: Christ Chapel Pavilion – Hwy 19 S of Zebulon (Across from Pike Schools)

PROGRAM: “Improving Your Herd”

Our Mid-Georgia show participants will be recognized at this meeting.

SPONSORS: Select Sires, Ivey’s and Zoetis

MEAL: Corner Café will be catering a delicious meal featuring beef.

COST: $10.00 (14 and over) $5.00 (7-13 years old and 6 and under free)

 RSVP DEADLINE: Monday, March 18 by Noon @ mgcaonline.com

If you RSVP on time, your name will go in a drawing for a Country Oaks Gift Certificate.
Please let us know how many are attending, so there will be plenty of food for all attending.

Make plans to come and learn more about how to improve your herd and enjoy gathering with other cattlemen and cattlewomen.

Several of the January Bull Sheets are still lost in the mailing. We have contacted the USPS. 
They were mailed Dec. 28th.

The March issue is being delivered to some of the local post offices, so
hopefully they will get to you on time.

79th WEST CENTRAL GEORGIA SHOW 

The show was held Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Upson-Lee Agriculture Center .

Congratulations to all our exhibitors that participated in the show. The Mid-Georgia Participants will be recognized at the March Meeting.

The Show committee and MGCA Board of Directors want to Thank everyone that helped sponsor or helped with this show. We appreciate the Upson-Lee FFA and School system for hosting this event.

A special thanks to the Monroe County Board Members, Cattlemen, Extension Service for hosting and planning the September Meeting.

Dr. Lee Jones, Professional Services Veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim, presented a very educational program on Pinkeye (IBK0 – Problems and Solutions. Dr Janemarie Hennebelle, Georgia State Veterinarian, discussed issues being address by the Georgia Department of Agriculture Animal Health.

SUMMER PICNIC RECAP

Thanks to the South Family for hosting our Summer Picnic! Attendees had the opportunity to tour the farm and learn about their farming operation. The association provided ribeye steak sandwiches for dinner. The strawberry ice cream and shortcake was a great treat.

JUNIOR NEWS

Keck Farm Team Wins Third Place

The 2023 Top Hand Stockmanship and Stewardship Contest Series was coordinated by UGA and GCA. Georgia’s Top Hand Champions were “Coffee County Girls”. Reserve Champion Team was Chattooga County. Third place was Keck Farm. The Keck Farm Team is from Mid-Georgia, and they also won the competition in Athens to advance to the state contest.

This event was hosted by Rick King at Rocky Branch Arena in Monroe County.  The students demonstrated their abilities in working cattle. The teams delivered Caliber 7, Express FP 10, injectable dewormer, Synanthic oral dewormer, XP 820 Fly Tag, recorded weights for dosing dewormers and scanned EIDs into the TagMax app.
The GA Beef Commission and NCBA supported this event.

The team consisted of Luke Sappington, Gage Doerr, and Samuel Edwards from Lamar and Butts County.

Mid-Georgia Association is very proud of these young men and thanks Keck Farm for supporting them.

MGCA SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED                             

The 2023 Mid-Georgia Cattlemen’s Association Memorial Scholarship recipient is Willow Waldrep from Forsyth.  Her parents are Bill and Sarah Waldrep from Monroe County.  Willow graduated from Mary Persons High School last month where she was very active in FFA, serving as an officer for two years and a delegate to the National FFA Convention, and other school clubs including student council.  Next school year she will be at UGA to major in animal science and ag business.

Willow was Mid-Georgia queen and participated in the West Central Georgia Steer and Heifer Show.  Her parents have been members of MGCA since 1999.  Willow is also the recipient of the Georgia Cattlewomen’s Association Scholarship for 2023.  Congratulations, Willow, times two!  We wish you much success in your college career.  Go Dawgs

What has MGCA AND MGCW BEEN DOING?

Bull Riding and Ribeye Steak Sandwiches

Despite the rain on the first night, we had a good a great time selling ribeye steak sandwiches and promoting beef and fundraising for our association.

BEEF AND BERRIES

Mother’s Day weekend was celebrated with Beef and Berries at Sweet South Strawberries! This was a great opportunity to promote beef to the community and provide educational opportunities to visit a farm. Families picked berries, learned about strawberries and cattle with exhibits manned by cattlewomen, juniors and Upson Farm Bureau members. SSS Farm donated the beef for our hamburger sale where proceeds went to MGCW youth activities. Thanks, SSS Farm and our Queen Mallory South for supporting this event!

COOKING BEEF WITH 4-H’ers

The ladies teamed up with Lamar 4-H and provided a beef cooking class. Students learned about where their beef comes from and how to cook some new recipes! What a yummy meal they cooked up for lunch!

Educating Our Youth

The MGCW have been busy visiting school to promote BEEF and Agriculture. These ladies explained where their hamburgers come from Farm to the Plate. They explained the many ways a cow helps them every day with the By-Products we get from a cow. These ladies represented the Georgia Cattlewomen and Georgia Beef Board at Heritage Elementary in Macon and Daughtry Elementary in Butts County. They visited with over 600 students and teachers at these events.  A big thanks to Carla Smith, Janet Greuel and Cynthia Douglas.

February Lunch N Learn          I Heart Beef

The Upson Extension and Mid-GA Cattlewomen are teamed up to serve beef at the February Upson/Lamar Lunch N Learn. 

Attendees learned about beef facts, proper handling, cuts of beef, and cooked their lunch.

78th West Central Georgia Show 

On January 28th, the Mid-Georgia members facilitated and sponsored the 78th West Central Georgia Show at Chestnut Oak Arena. The crowd cheered on 41 FFA and 4-H members as they exhibited 61 head of cattle. Randy Daniel of Partisover Ranch in Colbert, GA sorted through 13 steers and 48 heifers. With the gracious support of the sponsors, the exhibitors received premiums and awards totaling over $6000 in prizes.

            A special “thank you” to the cattlemen, cattlewomen, agents, advisors, parents, and Pike Agribusiness Authority for helping make this event take place.  The show committee appreciates all the businesses and members that made this show happen by you volunteering, contributing your resources, and donating to the show. The participants and spectators certainly enjoyed the food prepared by the cattlewomen and Coffee-A-GoGo.
